Voice, Movement, and Physical Choices

Use voice, breath, and movement as tools for truthful screen acting.

A character’s body and voice can reflect their situation, objective, relationship, and environment. Avoid adding a generic “character voice” without a reason grounded in the scene.

The core idea

Consider urgency, privacy, distance, fatigue, social pressure, and what the character is trying to control. These conditions can influence pace, volume, posture, and gesture without requiring a caricature.

How to apply it

Prioritise clear thought and understandable speech. Ask why a character moves now. A purposeful action may change the relationship; an unnecessary gesture may simply decorate a feeling.

Try this next

Repeat a short scene while changing one physical circumstance, such as needing to leave quickly or keep a conversation private. Observe changes in pace, breath, attention, and movement.
