Common Acting Mistakes and How to Work on Them

Identify common performance habits and replace vague self-criticism with specific practice.

Calling a performance “bad” does not tell you what caused the problem. Describe the observable behaviour, connect it to the scene, and test one adjustment.

The core idea

Playing an emotion instead of an action can feel forced. Return to what the character wants from the other person and what they are trying to change.

How to apply it

Planning every reaction in advance can disconnect you from a partner. Gestures can become decoration. Repeating a scene without a question can reinforce habits rather than improve them.

Try this next

Before the next take, choose one variable—objective, tactic, pace, listening, or movement—to test. Track what changed rather than comparing your entire ability with another actor.
